Remember that time you messed up at work and just wanted the floor to swallow you? We’ve all been there. That’s “losing face” – and today, let’s discuss why helping someone recover from that moment is a powerful leadership skill.

Hey friends, Coach Maya here!
So, why save face? Helping a colleague “save face” preserves dignity, inspires loyalty, and helps them bounce back. Let me share my client Daniel’s story.

Imagine Jeff, a Finance Director, discovers an employee stole over $100,000, and he designed the cash flow process that let it happen. The gossip spread, and Jeff felt like a “dead man walking.”

Then came the dreaded COO meeting. Everyone was anxious. The COO surprised everyone: “I don’t care about the theft.”

He explained that theft happens everywhere and only wanted to know if there was a plan to fix the process. Jeff’s demeanor brightened, and they focused on problem-solving. The COO saved his face.

Let’s break it down:
1. Created psychological safety while holding Jeff accountable.
2. Kind and firm, choosing words carefully, showing humility and emotional intelligence.
3. Helped Jeff overcome shame quickly, refocusing on solutions and showing trust.

Now it’s your turn! Think about when someone helped you save face or when you could’ve done it for someone else. Authentic face-saving means being intentional, respectful, and empathetic. No judgment, no ego – just real connection.

When done right, you gain loyalty and bring out the best in people. Have you been saved or saved someone’s face? Share your story!
