Hey friend! Coach Maya here.
After coaching thousands of highly successful leaders globally, I’ve noticed a pattern. Today, I’m going to share something that might make you uncomfortable, but could completely change your career trajectory. Let me tell you about Claudia. She excelled at work for 15 years, earned her dream promotion to senior executive, and then… reality hit. Suddenly, she felt like she was in a workplace reality show, complete with drama and power plays she never saw coming.
Sound familiar? Maybe you’re thinking, “I just want to do great work and get ahead on merit!” I hear this all the time. But here’s the thing – being great at your job is just part of the success equation.
The missing piece? Being politically savvy. Now, before you cringe, I’m not talking about being manipulative or fake. There’s a huge difference between playing dirty and playing smart.
Let me break down how to navigate office politics while keeping your integrity intact:
- Map the Power Players. Think of your workplace like a chessboard. Who are the key players? Who drives key decisions, officially and unofficially? Remember – It’s not about the org chart – it’s about understanding the real dynamics at play.
- Decode the Unwritten Rules. Every workplace has unwritten rules about “how things get done around here.” Find yourself a trusted mentor who can help you crack this code faster than learning it the hard way.
- Master the Win-Win Pitch. When presenting ideas, think bigger than just your team. Show how your proposals benefit the whole organization. The more people who win, the more support you’ll get.
- Build Genuine Alliances. When someone helps you succeed, don’t just say “thanks” and move on. Look for meaningful ways to support their work, too. Share credit generously. Amplify their ideas in meetings. Connect them with helpful resources or people. The strongest careers are built on real relationships, not transactional favors. I’ve watched this single shift change the trajectory of countless leaders’ careers.
The bottom line? You don’t have to play dirty to play smart. It’s about understanding the game and playing it with integrity. Here’s what I want you to think about: Are you really as influential at work as you think you are? Or are you just hiding behind your good performance? Be brutally honest in the comments – and tell me, what’s holding you back from playing the game smart? If you like this video, don’t forget to share it with your work buddies, friends, and family.
See you next time!
